New inclusive sportswear for St George's Edinburgh

Limitless is delighted to be the new sportswear provider to St George’s School, Edinburgh, from September 2023.

The school began looking for a new sportswear provider in 2022. Limitless were invited to tender due to their strong reputation for supporting all young people in the school community to be active, by providing them with comfortable sportswear options. This is something St George’s were keen to explore. Our Business Development Team presented background on the company and samples of sportswear to the senior leadership team, and impressed them with the variety and quality of the garments.

Before any redesign began, St George’s surveyed their students on barriers to participation in sport. Kit ranked highly as something that could prevent students from taking part. As an all-girls school, specifically female-fit kit was considered vital, as were garments that would fit all girls regardless of shape or size; the goal was to create a range of kit that reduced concerns about body image and inspired all students to participate.

The old kit was popular but the design didn’t fit St George’s vision going forwards. The striking blue and red stripes are a huge part of the school’s branding, and care had to be taken to honour the school’s heritage and history while updating the look. Both parents and students were consulted and Limitless designers were briefed to create something updated and modern, without losing the distinctive stripes. The design team came up with many suitable possibilities and the strongest were presented to the school, allowing them plenty of choice before being narrowed down to a core selection of garments.

One vital step forward has been the addition of a new short design, as an alternative to the traditional skort. Although not everyone is yet in the kit due to a changeover period, there has been a huge uptake in the purchase of shorts in both junior and senior schools, showing that students appreciate having the choice. Netball dresses and games kit have been similarly well-received.

Christine Fourie, Director of Sport, says: “Everything about Limitless, from their website to the variety and quality of garments, spoke to high quality and a company that knows what it’s doing. Throughout the process we couldn’t fault the consideration and expertise that the team brought to our sportswear. Change is not always easy and we’ve extended the changeover period to help our parents, but there has still been a lot of excitement and take-up of the new kit – in fact we’re yet to receive any negative feedback!”

As we know from our 2021 research with the Youth Sport Trust, only 58% of girls are happy with the amount of physical activity they do. Access to sportswear that promotes confidence and inclusivity can improve this, and we’re proud to offer St George’s Edinburgh the sports kit that will encourage all of their students to stay active during their school years.
